Antwerp, Belgium ‘Spare a Second’ (Dec 18th – Dec 31st, 2008)
On December 18 International Migrants Day is celebrated around the world and different events take place accordingly.
In Brussels, Studio Brussels ‘Music for Life’ is organizing an event to raise funds for Mothers on the Run across the country and in Antwerp Galley Sjantall is organizing an Artwalk, in support of ‘Music for Life’ initiative, which consists in visiting different galleries in the city with the purpose of unifying people from all walks of life through art.
The Antwerp Artwalk will start at 19hs with Argentine human rights photojournalist exhibition, Spare a Second, where 18 of his photographs taken in different refugee camps in Kenya, Liberia and Guinea will be shown.
In this occasion human rights photojournalist Justo Casal wants to raise awareness on refugee issues, explain the differences between refugees and immigrants as well as their similarities.
As Alexander Betts explains is his paper, Towards a ‘soft law’ framework for the protection of vulnerable migrants:
“An increasing number of irregular migrants have protection needs arising as a result of movement. Irregular migration is a dynamic process and people’s circumstances can change dramatically during transit between the country of origin and destination.” Betts also says that “Irrespective of the reasons why a person left her country of origin, she may face threats to her human rights that emerge during the process of movement.”
